Mission Impossible 4 - Hollywood

Director: Brad Bird

Writers: Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec

Stars: Tom Cruise, Paula Patton, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Samuli Edelmann, Ivan Shvedoff, Anil Kapoor, Léa Seydoux, Josh Holloway, Pavel Kris, Miraj Grbic, Ilia Volok, Goran Navojec

U.S. theaters will be crammed-full with anticipated sequels and literary adaptations throughout the last month of 2011. Among the titles that moviegoers will be flocking to are Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Fincher’s adaptation of the international best-seller, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

A (collective) handful of TV promos have already been unveiled for both these titles. Today, we add a second TV spot for the fourth Mission: Impossible – along with a 60-second-long Girl With the Dragon Tattoo clip, complete with new footage.

Tom Cruise scales the tallest building in the world in 'Ghost Protocol'

Here is the lowdown on the plot of Ghost Protocol:

The Kremlin has been bombed, and the blame has fallen on the IMF. As a result, the president initiates Ghost Protocol, and accuses Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team of placing the bomb in an attempt to incite a global nuclear war. Now in order to clear the IMF of terrorism charges, Ethan assembles a new team to uncover the truth by using every high-tech trick in the book. But this time they’re on their own, and should they be caught, the entire world could be plunged into a nightmare from which there is no waking up.

Now check out the latest TV spot for the film below:

Moviegoers are forgiven if they’ve grown tired of watching Cruise basically save the world. However, between the actor’s (literal) death-defying stunts and what appears to be energetic direction on the part of animation guru Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille), Ghost Protocol looks to deliver some genuinely exhilarating thrills.

Ghost Protocol also has the benefit of a cast that includes people like Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Tom Wilkinson, and Jeremy Renner. Several of the film’s more ridiculous (re: entertaining) set pieces should also be all the more fun to watch in the full IMAX format… and not just because you may get to see the Dark Knight Rises‘ prologue at the beginning.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander

Read on for a quick summary of Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo adaptation, which was scripted by Oscar-winner Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, American Gangster, Moneyball):

The film is based on Stieg Larsson’s internationally best-selling novel centering on a murder mystery looking as far back as 40 years at the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families. All these years later, her aged uncle (Christopher Plummer) continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

Now watch the new sixty-second Dragon Tattoo promo below:

Fincher’s take on Girl With the Dragon Tattoo looks to feature a sophisticated visual style and grainy color palette that was simply lacking in Swedish director Niels Arden Oplev’s well-liked adaptation of the story. Similarly, Mara appears to have made the role of Lisbeth her own by capturing the anti-heroine’s disturbingly introverted nature and “dangerous” appearance. Craig, for all intents and purposes, seems solid enough (if less impressive) as Blomkvist.

Another important factor that should help distinguish this new Dragon Tattoo adaptation from its Swedish counterpart: a good chunk of the narrative material present in Larsson’s original novel was not present in the Swedish film. Seeing how Zaillian is drawing solely from the Dragon Tattoo book, it does not seem a stretch to say that Fincher’s project could feel more like a truly unique and quality take on Larsson’s captivating neo-Noir tale.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens in IMAX theaters around the U.S. on December 16th, 2011. It will expand wider five days later on the 21st.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo likewise hits U.S. theaters on December 21st, 2011.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Hollywood

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

Time:- 129 min

Gener: Action | Adventure | Crime | Mystery | Thriller

Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty.

Director: Guy Ritchie

Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Jared Harris, Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, Stephen Fry, Eddie Marsan

THE BUZZ: Aside from the hokey supernatural stuff and the underutilization of Rachel McAdams, I thought Guy Ritchie did a bang-up job in delivering the world of Arthur Conan Doyle to present-day fans and newbies alike (you can imagine that the presence of RDJ was a gateway into all things Holmes for many of the people that made the first movie a runaway worldwide hit). Having the Holmes Bros. and Watson chase Prof. Moriarty across Europe is a great storyline pick, and I cannot wait to see what Jared Harris from "Mad Men" brings to the sequel (he was the surprise - and quite fitting - pick to play Holmes's chief nemesis) as well as Noomi Rapace in her first major post-Lisbeth role. If a second sequel is made, doesn't that length of time qualify Holmes and Watson for a common law marriage?

Opening This Week - Hollywood

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
127 min - Thriller

In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons.

Director: Tomas Alfredson
Stars: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy

Despite the presence of Colin Firth and Tom Hardy and the anticipation of director Tomas Alfredson's follow up to Let the Right One In, all indications point to this being a tour de force for Gary Oldman -- a long overdue proper starring role for one of our favorite actors. Working Title Films/Universal sorta botched their last attempt to modernize a classic BBC mini-series (remember State of Play?), but now that the studio has smartly moved the project over to Focus Features, we're thinking this thriller has serious Oscar potential now that the Best Picture race isn't so uptight.

RA-One - Bollywood Movie

Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Armaan Verma, Shahana Goswami, Tom Wu

Directed by Anubhav Sinha

Rating: Not even One

The film sweeps us into a video game fantasy where anything is possible (with a 175-crore-budget, it better be). Game developer, Shekhar Subramanium (Shahrukh Khan) wants to earn his son, Prateek's (Armaan Verma) love and respect. And the only thing that gives Prateek joy is to see his joystick twiddling to spell doom for the most impossible super-villain ever. So daddy makes a baddie just like that and calls it R.A.One (Arjun Rampal). The game also has a not-so-indestructible superhero called G.One (an emotionally challenged Shahrukh). Please read the box carefully for the 25 permutation-combinations in which R.A.One and G.One can kill each other (something to do with the heart being in the body and not in the pocket or anywhere else during combat).

Anyway, it gets nasty as the characters tear out of the game, 'Terminator 2' style and thanks to some goofy programming, R.A.One is hell-bent on killing Prateek. Naturally, G.One has to do the rescuing and being an android, do it without getting teary-eyed or romantic with Prateek's mum, Sonia (Kareena Kapoor). But who said robots can't ham or chant prophetic life-changing verses coded by its master? No.One!

Science fiction is an oxymoron. And when this genre is sprinkled with moronic humour and logic takes a beating from hell, you know you've punched your tickets for 'R.A.One'. With metallic blue and red costumes right out of Falguni Pathak's wardrobe, this out-of-console experience offers laughs, dances and androids touching humans in more ways than considered socially acceptable. Insert coin to read more.

Humour based on linguistic stereotypes may have worked in 'Zabaan Sambhalke' but now it hardly earns a chuckle. This is assuming the average audience intellect dictates that Tamilians don't always say 'Aiyoo' or pronounce 'keys' as 'kiss'. And even if they do, no amount of laughter track can make this seem funny. No.Fun!

'R.A.One' does what no other Sci-Fi movie has done before: it mocks itself. So, the superhero who is manually stopping trains in one scene, is also burning his crotch or sneezing out metallic wires in another. No respect.

Shahrukh's robotic expressions will remind you of his 'My Name is Khan' role, as he confuses machines with differently-abled humans. Kareena's character covers the entire gamut of expressions but isn't memorable or mentionable enough to be regarded. Arjun Rampal has bagged his dream role: an android with mechanical expressions who allows his body to do the talking. Good job, Arjun Rampal's body!

The VFX award would go for most battle arenas, inspired from many popular games. It wouldn't go for the local train sliding out of CST station like a PowerPoint slide.

It's convenient to say that if you have no expectations from R.A.One, you wouldn't be disappointed. But if you feel so little for the film, why go to watch it at all?

Desi Boyz - Bollywood movie

Film: “Desi Boyz”
Starring: Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Chitrangda Singh, Anupam Kher
Written & Directed by: Rohit Dhawan
Rating: 35star

Boys bonding is a great subject for comedies. Tarun Mansukhani tried it in “Dostana”. Debutant director Rohit Dhawan gives a far more blithe and effervescent spin to that thing called friendship that makes us do all kinds of weird and wonderful things. Sometimes in tandem.
“Desi Boyz” has ample room for skin-show and cheesiness. It goes for the skin with elan and avoids the cheesy ramifications by simply turning away from double meanings (the director Rohit’s father David Dhawan’s forte). Yes, there’re phallic references and mischievous eye-rolling whispers and nudges relying on women’s body-parts.
But the overall impression is that of a class comic act, a sumptuously-mounted sex comedy, no pun, but plenty fun, intended.
The songs (Pritam) and the choreography remain true to the film’s entertainment-quotient. And the performances are a delight. Deepika has just a couple of scenes to sink her teeth into. She’s a delight in the sequence where she tries to win John back from a Caucasian diversion in a pub. Chitrangda’s sexy teacher act echoing Sushmita Sen in “Main Hoon Na”, shows her taking full charge of the commercial language. She smoulders.
John Abraham had hardly ever been seen having so much fun. Though his dancing is still lumbering, this ranks as his most watchable performance since “New York”. And Anupam Kher as his father-in-law-to-be brings a queer blend of a 17-going-on-70 boy-man to his patriarch’s part. Great fun to play and to view.

But the film finally belongs to Akshay Kumar, make no mistake about that. While other A-list stars from his generation have begun to look faded at the edges Akshay gets better with each film. Here, in this film, his comic timing is matched by his ability to hold up dramatic moments without letting them sink into over-sentimentality. This is arguably Akshay’s best performance in a comic role since Priyadarshan’s “Hera Pheri”.
Put your hands together for “Desi Boyz”. Smart, sassy, sexy and sparkling with dark audacious humour, the film brings us a striking director in Rohit Dhawan. – IANS

The Dirty Picture - Review and Star Cast

Director: Milan Luthria
Cast: Vidya Balan, Naseruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor
Genre: Biography, Drama
Synopsis: Loosely based on Silk Smitha, a sex symbol from the South film industry. The bindaas Silk knew her audiences well and she seemed unstoppable until she fell in love which could not be fulfilled. She was the queen of sensuality to the world but an ordinary woman at heart who sought true love. An unfortunate encounter with deceit and infidelity led to the tragedy that became her life.
Review: After the successful “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai”, The Ekta Kapoor-Luthria-Arora trio take it up one notch higher with “The Dirty Picture”. It’s not perfect by any means, the plot has many ironical loopholes, but the end product is impactful nonetheless. Anchored by a fire-powered and uninhibited performance by Vidya Balan, “The Dirty Picture” exposes the dirty and biased Southern industry of the 80’s. Where the hero can fire a shot at a 500 rupee note in the air and make chiller out of it, but the heroine and the vamp are nothing but card-board cut outs. Yes, we still see that kind of cinema, but the harshness and crudity of the 80’s for women as well as Cinema at large is shockingly and accurately depicted.
The film follows the journey of an applause hungry and ‘not afraid to use her sexuality’ Reshma. Her journey from the small town Reshma who runs away from home to the sex-siren ‘Silk’ takes the usual struggle cum casting-couch turns. Which is why the first half is slightly predictable. But its gets infinitely better after the interval. She becomes a victim of fame, a victim of the human need for love. Refreshingly bold yet vulnerable, applause hungry and proud yet craves for normalcy. ‘Silk’ is an absolute pleasure to watch, in every way (pun intended).
Performance-wise, Vidya takes a bold and luscious character and makes it bolder and violently breath-taking. Hats-off to a well written character and an even better portrayal.
Watch out Rani Mukherjee, someone’s dethroned you (and how). Naseerudin Shah as usual makes the chauvinistic, hypocritical, and womanizing character seem like it’s been carved for him. Emraan’s chemistry with Vidya although sizzling, his performance is rather withdrawn. That could be the result of being overshadowed by two spectacular actors (Balan and Shah).
Musically, the hit south number ‘naka mukka’ is used exceptionally well at key plot points of the film. But hold your breath; the cream of this well-baked pie is the dialogue. Rajat Arora scripts one after the other sparkling dialogue, enough to keep the audience clapping every ten minutes. In fact, I will go as far as to say that I have never before watched a film being held together by a constant wit and repartee of dialogue.
The film is the end leaves you thinking, with many questions raised. For example, can a woman be bold and still receive long lasting love. Is the hunger for fame and applause always fatal? The climax however, is sad but not depressing; Luthria makes sure to end even that with a bang.

Shame - Hollywood

Shame (2011)
101 min   -   Drama
Metascore: 71/100
In New York City, Brandon's carefully cultivated private life -- which allows him to indulge his sexual addiction -- is disrupted when his sister Cissy arrives unannounced for an indefinite stay.
Director:
Steve McQueen

Stars:
Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale
THE BUZZ: Like Drive before it, Steve McQueen's follow-up to Hunger has earned the strongest reviews of the year from the festival circuit, though this NC-17 foray into the world of sex addiction will be harder to market than an almost-mute Ryan Gosling action movie. Michael Fassbender, looking hollow but heaps more robust than his career launching performance in Hunger, will earn most of the headlines for his endowment, which is often on display, but the true focus should be on McQueen's artful, purposeful, and uncompromising direction. Okay, really I can't wait to see Fassbender naked.
